Should I Choose a Wedding Band or a DJ?

The big music question is always whether it's better to have a live band or a DJ for your wedding. Music choice most certainly affects the mood of a wedding, so this can be challenging.

Ideally, you may want a bit of both – orchestral music for walking down the aisle and a DJ for the reception. It's best to make these decisions and book a musician around six months before your wedding day.

Let's break it down, shall we?

A DJ

Hiring a DJ is typically more cost-effective, but you need to choose the right one. If this is your preference, make sure the DJ has your kind of music on their playlists and that they understand your tastes.

Getting a DJ usually is more straightforward, but the wrong person can kill the party. It's best to give them a test run by checking out their other performances before you commit.

Depending on their experience and the period you need music; some DJs can be just as expensive as a live band. Make sure you are aware of their fee structure.

A Band

There's nothing like live music to create a vibe. If you and your partner are live band fans, this may be the way to go. However, a live band is undoubtedly more complicated than a DJ. You also need to make sure they are suitable and have the necessary experience to play at a wedding. Again, watch them at other events before you decide.

Getting a band can be more expensive, and you may encounter more restrictions in several areas. Some venues are picky about how many band members they allow, and the decibel level.

A band may also have a limited repertoire, where a DJ will have an almost infinite playlist to choose from.

A Bit of Both

A lovely, sophisticated idea is to have live violin or guitar for an hour or two around the time guests arrive, as you walk down the aisle, and a little after. You can then get a DJ to take care of the reception celebrations.

However, this may prove more complicated to arrange and may push costs up. Perhaps a family member or friend plays an instrument and can help you out. This way, you'll get what you want, save money, and give someone an opportunity for promoting their musical talent.

Many couples go this route, and it works out beautifully.

Last Thoughts

Before choosing a DJ or band, review your budget carefully, as well as your personal needs, preferences, and of course the logistics.

Top tip:

A great way to tell if either kind of musician for you or not is the first dance song you’ve chosen to be played! If the DJ or band does not know it and is not keen to learn it, you should move on.
