So, you’ve found the man of your dreams, and you’re getting married - congratulations! Now, let the wedding planning begin. The earlier you start, the less last-minute madness you’ll have, and the more seamless your wedding will be.

During the Engagement

  • Announce the engagement
  • Select your wedding date
  • Start collecting wedding inspiration
  • Establish a budget
  • Decide on members of your wedding party and involve them immediately
  • Take time to enjoy being engaged!

9 - 12 Months Before the Wedding

  • Hire a wedding planner if necessary
  • Decide on a wedding theme, style and formality, and whether it will be a morning, afternoon, or evening affair and other related points from the inspiration you’ve gathered
  • Explore, decide on, and book a wedding venue
  • Book a marriage officiant
  • Research and contact photographer and videographer
  • Plan your guest list
  • Send out save-the-dates
  • Start hunting for your wedding gown and bridesmaids’ dresses
  • Plan flowers, invites, and décor to match your overall theme
  • Set up a wedding expenses spreadsheet
  • Start any necessary health and beauty routines

6 – 9 Months Before

  • Design wedding invitations that match your overall theme
  • Finalise and pay deposits for you and your bridesmaids’ dresses
  • Put together a duty or task list for your wedding party
  • Decide on and pay deposits for your: florist, caterer, musicians, hairstylist, and make-up artist
  • Start a couple’s dance class if you plan on a fancy first dance!
  • Book wedding night accommodation
  • Start planning and booking honeymoon details
  • Work on outfits with the groom and groomsmen
  • Start shopping for wedding rings and bridal accessories
  • Let guests coming from out of town know about accommodation possibilities

4 – 6 Months Before

  • Try wedding cakes and book your baker
  • Arrange wedding transport
  • Sort out travel documents if you are planning on honeymooning overseas (passports, visas, travel insurance, vaccinations, etc.)
  • Prepare legal marriage documents, i.e. the antenuptial agreement, and follow up with your officiant about the marriage license
  • Make a list of organisations you’ll have to inform about your name change, arrange insurance policies, etc. 
  • Purchase wedding gifts for the parents, wedding party, and your partner

2 – 4 Months Before

  • Confirm wedding ceremony details such as vows, songs/hymns, prayers, etc.
  • Finalise reception details with all your suppliers
  • Do a menu tasting if you have not already
  • Send out official wedding invitations
  • Order/arrange any stationery needed for the wedding, such as guest seating plan at the reception, the menu, table name cards, etc.
  • Finalise wedding rings
  • Do dress fittings
  • Arrange honeymoon garments
  • Finalise bridesmaids’ shoes and accessories
  • Decide on and arrange guest party favours
  • Finalise the wedding cake
  • Get any necessary hair care done
  • Do hair and make-up trial
  • Ensure there are contingencies for cases like bad weather, unforeseen complications with the cake or flowers, etc.

6 – 8 Weeks Before

  • Choose music for the ceremony, first dance etc.
  • Finalise your guest list and place cards
  • Make a list of people to include in photos on the day
  • Check your dress and wedding party attire are ready
  • Record kitchen tea gifts and send thank-yous
  • Purchase any outstanding accessories – remember the garter and guest book
  • Plan and prepare invites for the rehearsal dinner
  • Select your something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue!

2 – 4 Weeks Before

  • Do a dress rehearsal to make sure everything fits and looks gorgeous
  • Write a wedding day itinerary
  • Do seating plans
  • Confirm final numbers with the caterers
  • Finalise honeymoon details
  • Have your engagement and wedding rings cleaned
  • Make sure wedding favours are ready
  • Break in your wedding shoes at home

1 Week Before

  • Finalise itinerary and give it to the relevant wedding party members, vendors, transport people etc.
  • Share relevant contact details with people who may need to be in touch on the day, i.e. your maid of honour and the caterer
  • Double-check with all your vendors and service providers that all is in order
  • Arrange any final payments
  • Have a routine facial and mani-pedi
  • Pack for the wedding night and honeymoon if you’re going away immediately
  • Collect any hired items
  • Have the wedding rehearsal and dinner; give gifts to the wedding party
  • Keep to a good exercise and sleep routine 

The Day Before

  • Finalise any last-minute details
  • Do or oversee venue set up 
  • Go over vows
  • Double-check seating arrangements
  • Give rings to the best man
  • Make sure you have something for breakfast the next day
  • Find some time to do some exercise and to relax 
  • Get a good night’s rest

On the Big Day

  • Eat a good breakfast
  • Enjoy getting ready leisurely with your bridesmaids 
  • Cherish every moment!
