The Do's and Don’ts

While the engagement should be shared on social media (after all you want the world to know!), there are a few things you should do before you post the exciting news.

1. Don't rush the social media post

Gasping with hands clasped at the chest, facing your significant other as they lower onto one knee, utter euphoria on both of your faces as you promise to spend the remainder of your days with each other is the moment that all of us want to blast onto our Instagram and Facebook accounts as soon as we can.

But there is more time for that later. Enjoy the moment and relax before the wedding planning gets started. Celebrate the moment between yourselves and dream about the excitement of planning your future together. This is the time to avoid drama and just relish the prospect of spending the rest of your life with the person you love.

2. Tell your nearest and dearest first

Consider the people who would appreciate the news as much as you, the ones who would make toasts to your never-ending commitment, and the ones who will do everything they can to make this the happiest occasion they can. If you choose a small gathering of close family or calling them individually, let them know personally instead of letting them find out through some third-party means. You will no doubt avoid the hurt of them finding out on social media.

3. Mind the timing of your announcement

While your news is of utmost importance to you, you don’t want to overshadow other events by those closest to you, such as weddings, newborns or other big news that your immediate circle has just gotten.

4. WhatsApp your tribe

A personal note or message filled with excited emojis is the way to go. They will feel special to receive a personalized note from the Bride-to-be! Consider creative or unorthodox ways to announce the engagement on social media.

Everyone loves a fairytale, so why not immerse yourself in the dream? The famous ‘I said Yes!’ will always be reciprocated with a myriad of emoji-ridden reactions. Don’t forget to accompany the announcement with photos capturing the special moment! Even a simple picture of the ring on your finger with a beautiful sunset or a selfie of the two of you with the ring clearly on your finger, will certainly get the message across.

Social media is full of interesting and creative ways to share news and photos of the proposal. You can even let your pet do the dirty work! After all, our furry friends are like family. Shoot a picture of your dog with a catchy caption such as: "Mom and Dad got engaged", "She said YES” or “He put a ring on it, just like Beyonce said he should!”.

Next up... Let the wedding planning begin!
