Yes, the bride gets most of the limelight on the wedding day, but the groom and groomsmen also need to look sharp. Whether you’re planning a formal look or something more off-the-cuff, you want to appear at your most handsome.
Here are our top tips for a well-put-together, classically masculine look at your wedding.
The first thing to do is chat with your fiancée about attire. She doesn’t have to see your outfit beforehand if you prefer to keep it a surprise, but you need to coordinate. If you don’t, nasty surprises like colour and style clashes could spell disaster on the big day.
Your bride will most likely want to know precisely what the groomsmen will be wearing. She’ll probably also let you know what the bridesmaids will wear. This way, you can introduce common elements to create a sense of continuity in your wedding attendants’ outfits. It looks striking and pleasing to the eye when the attendants’ attire is complementary.
You can also chat with your bride to be about the formality of your clothing. Are you going the traditional formal route, or keeping it fun and light? Discuss what vibe you’re going for. Going vintage is always a charming option. It’s a fresh look that’s still smart enough for a wedding.
It would look very odd if the bride and groom were wearing clothes of different formality levels. It’s best to keep things looking streamlined. A useful tip is to keep checking in with the wedding planner and Maid of Honour. They will know what the bride and bridesmaid are planning, and can therefore help keep you on track.
Top Tip
Don’t forget to make sure all your shoes and belts at least look alike and are of similar shades. It is very noticeable in photographs if these are mismatched. You’ll probably never hear the end of it from Mrs. if you miss this one!
Make sure you put your budget in place for you and your groomsmen’s attire. Do a bit of research about what the costs are. Will your groomsmen buy their own clothing, or is there room in your budget to help them out?
You can also consider suit hire, which is much more cost-effective. This is an excellent idea if you’re not all that formal a person. That way, you won’t have a costly suit stashed away at the back of your closet that you’ll never wear again. It’s a convenient option for the groomsmen as well.
Make sure your suits and other wedding attire are organised 3 to 5 months ahead of the wedding. If you’re getting your ensembles specially tailored, you may even want to allow more time, just in case.
Remember, there will always be alterations that need to be made. So again, you’ll need plenty of time for this. Aim to pick up the suits at least six weeks before the wedding and have a final fitting. This way, there will still be some time to make any last-minute adjustments.
If you’re renting any items, make sure you keep a note of when they need to be returned.
The groom should undoubtedly stand out from the crowd, and not just meld into the groomsmen’s milieu, on his special day. You don’t have to wear exactly what they’re wearing, but be sure to keep to similar or complementing tones.
You can also wear a different colour tie, neckerchief, vest, waistcoat, or pocket hanky or boutonniere to the groomsmen’s to differentiate.
Your wedding day is the perfect occasion to dress your very best. Make the most of it and enjoy the process!
