Insider Tips for Your Wedding Make-Up

Dedicated skincare and a wedding make-up strategy are crucial for a successful look on the day. It's not as tough as it sounds, but it does take discipline, time, and planning. Commit to it, and you'll be A-for-away.

Here's what you can do to look absolutely gorgeous on your wedding day:

Skincare

The first thing you're going to need is a flawless canvas. Even with a good foundation, it's noticeable if the skin beneath is not in tip-top shape. To avoid tired, greyish, blemished skin at your wedding, do the following:

  • Stick to your morning and evening skincare routine without fail.
  • Eat healthily.
  • Drink a lot of water.
  • Minimise drinking alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and eating sugary foods.
  • Get some exercise to clear out pores and give you a glow.

Research Looks

Search online and in wedding magazines for make-up looks that you like. You can pin them in your wedding journal or online inspiration page for referral. Be sure that the look you ultimately choose goes with your skin tone, dress, and overall wedding theme.

Ideally, your wedding make-up should be a more polished version of your everyday appearance. You don't want to look like a stranger to your fiancé as you walk down the aisle!

Here are some other related tips:

Keep it Classic

It's best not to follow 'out there' trends for wedding make-up. It may be fun on the day, but look silly in your photos in 20 years. Keep all application light, even, and natural.

Don't be Scared of Colour

We don't mean you must go for fluorescent pink lipstick here, but a little extra colour can give your face a charming lift. Your dress's whiteness also means you need some colour for balance and not look washed out.

Using light dust of the right blush tone, and a quality lipstick can help. Lipstick shades in roses, plums, and pinks are lovely for brides.

Accentuate Your Eyes

Whether you or a professional will do your wedding make-up, you also want to accentuate your eyes. Don't go too dark – you want the make-up to highlight your eyes, not draw attention to itself. It helps keep the darker work close to your lash line, and use neutrals or soft colours in the eye crease.

Decide on Self or Professional Make-up Application

If you're on a tight budget and have a simple wedding, you may consider doing your own make-up. This is perfectly fine, but make sure you play around with looks ahead of time and practice the application for a flawless result.

Get some advice about the right foundation and colour tones to use. Then practice and practice until you feel confident you can pull it off on the day.

If you can, having an expert is ideal. Their knowledge and variety of tools and potions will help you look you're very best. They can also advise you on the right look for you.

However, don't let the professionals boss you around. Make-up artists are creative people; they can get carried away! While it's lovely to indulge in having a pro do your make-up, be clear with them about what you want. Don't let them take the wheel and steer you towards a look that's not quite 'you'.

Once you've found an expert you like, book a make-up trial. It's best to do this at least two months in advance in case there are problems. Wear your jewelry and a top that matches your wedding dress's tone to get the full feel of how you'll look at the wedding.

Luxurious Lashes

Consider using individual extensions rather than mascara on the day. This way, you'll have lush, elegant lashes that won't melt when you have an emotional moment. You can do this a few weeks in advance to get used to it and have a touch up a few days before the wedding.

Forget the Sunscreen

Very counter-intuitive, we know, but your complexion will show more naturally without sunscreen. Flash photography picks up the SPF and makes your skin look white, ghostly, and flat.

Lastly, keep a little stash of make-up essentials on you, or with your Maid of Honour on the day. You can then quickly touch up when you need to.
