6 Key Things To Do Before You Start Wedding Planning

So you've just got engaged, and cannot wait to get started planning your dream wedding. While it's exciting, it can also be a daunting time. It helps to iron out a few things and establish the right mindset before you launch into the actual wedding planning.

Here are a few tips for setting up a successful ceremony:

Know Yourself

This may sound 'out there', but by being authentic, you can help significantly. Take some time to know who you are and what you want. Of course, you will have to make some concessions along the way, but this tip can solve a lot.

For example, if you aren't crazy about crowds yet have a big wedding in mind, it may not work. You may get overwhelmed by planning a large event, which will take the joy out of it.

Be honest about what you want. Ask yourself things like:

  • What is a priority to me about my wedding and impending marriage?
  • Do I want something extravagant or simple, formal or casual?
  • What can I/we afford, and could some sums of money be spent better elsewhere?
  • What would I regret if I didn't do/ have on our special day?
  • What do I want to remember most fondly about our wedding?
  • How much of the planning can I take on myself, and where will I need help?

Don't forget to make sure you do some frequent self-care throughout the wedding planning process to keep you calm, grounded, and in touch with what's important. Think about the kinds of activities that relax and rejuvenate you, and schedule them in.

Communicate with your Partner

Once you know where you are individually,y it is essential to be clear about what your partner wants as well so that you may compromise and create a day that is equally special for both of you. This applies both for your wedding day and for your future together. After all, you're doing this as a team.

Ensure you're on the same page and communicate often to see if anything has changed along the way. Some compromises will likely need to be made by both parties. Your partner may want a small wedding and you a larger one, for instance. Talk it out and decide on something that works for you both.

There will be some matters that cause a bit of friction. Approach these gently and openly. By being open-minded and considerate, you can get through anything.

Do Research

When you're newly engaged, we tend to romanticise the circumstances. There's beauty to that, but you need to ground yourself and do your homework at some point. Find out about the various types of marriage contracts, how things work and what the financial implications will be.

This is also a good time to look into wedding into venue hire, décor inspiration, catering, attire, transport, accommodation, and the costs of everything. HAPPLY.co.za has loads of resources on the website to help you.

Decide on Timing

Talk to your fiancé about whether you would both prefer a long or a short engagement. Be realistic about what works logistically and financially. Weddings costs can climb quickly, and they involve a lot of time and planning. Thus, pushing for an early wedding date may cause unnecessary pressure.

Be realistic about the time frame you need to sort everything out at a pace that suits you as a couple.

Also, be sure to enjoy your engagement. It is a beautiful time to be treasured and remembered

Build a Good Support System

Make sure the people helping you put the wedding together are upbeat and on your side. This cannot be stressed enough. Support includes the wedding party, family, friends, and wedding professionals.

A robust support system will help get you through the tough days, and celebrate the good ones.

Set an Intention

You may find that things can get out of hand quite quickly. Before all this starts, think about how you would like matters to proceed and set a goal.

If you've consciously established this as a couple, you'll recognise when the process moves away from the ideal. You can then gently guide things back on track. There will be fun, there
